def. the book. the movie left out too much.
The book hands down. Here's a few of the (thousands of) reasons why:
-Astrid being 15 at the beginning, she didn't really grow/change as much because of how short the timespan was
-Making Ray younger and removing a lot of his important character aspects (smoking pot, carpentry, the new houses)
-The removal of the Olivia and Amelia periods
-Rearranging the time line
-The removal of the LSD trip along with the supporting characters of Yvonne and Nikki (yes I know they were there but they weren't important)
-The addition of the Paul Trout romance...on a sidenote, for someone who was such a main character in the movie it's shocking that his name (first OR last) was only said TWICE
-The removal of Astrid's quirk about names
-The complete ruination of Claire's character and the way the story worked out. Changing Ron's name to Mark was lame too.
-Serge? Where are you?!
-Changing the Annie story
-The ending
I agree with you on everything, especially Claire. I love Renee Zellwegger, but I HATED her as Claire. It was just so completely WRONG.
I honestlty don't think so. Even though the image of Claire in the book was different than they made it in the movie, I really liked her. I loved her character so much. She was the one mother-figure with both depth and warmth. Unfortunately for Astrid, she was also a nut.
I agree with a lot of what you said, especially the short length of time in the movie.
Some had to go just because of time restrictions, which any movie-goer understands, of course.
The thing I really disagree with is your comment on the ending. It's silly, I know, but I am a huge sucker for happy endings, so the book absolutely broke my heart.
Just my thoughts.
Hehe I *loved* the book ending. I wanted a sequal...whereas in the movie...it was over :(
Huh. Wow. Of all the times I've wanted a sequal, I never thought of that! Wow... *thinks*
the book, no question. why? it was more powerful, easier to connect to. and renee zellweger as claire? just -- no. (and she was supposed to be Audrey Hepburn-esque!!!)
Ah...thats true...but most definetly....Michelle Phifer (sp*) Was exactly how I envisioned Ingrid...and Alison Lohman did a good Astrid....what I hated was Ray (in the movie) I mean...it would be a bit perverse otherwise...but still....and I think they should have developed the Rina bit of the movie more
the book, i like the movie though, but yeah i love the book the most. but i did also see the movie before reading the book.
